Resources & Structure
Organizational structure and resource allocation diagrams.
A bar chart showing scheduled work time for a resource over a period. Identifies over- and under-allocation.
Key Features
- X-axis: Time periods (days, weeks, months)
- Y-axis: Hours or percentage of capacity
- Availability line: Maximum available hours
- Bars exceeding the line = over-allocation
Leveling vs. Smoothing
- Leveling: Resolves over-allocation. May extend end date.
- Smoothing: Adjusts within float. Does NOT change critical path.
Shows the structure of an organization and reporting relationships.
Organizational Structures
- Functional: Grouped by specialty. PM has limited authority.
- Projectized: Organized around projects. PM has full authority.
- Matrix (Weak): Functional manager has more power.
- Matrix (Balanced): Power shared equally.
- Matrix (Strong): PM has more power.
Structure directly impacts PM authority, resource availability, and communication channels.
A grid mapping activities to team members. The most common form is the RACI Matrix.
Structure
- Rows: Work packages or activities (from WBS)
- Columns: Team members or roles
- Cells: Type of participation (R, A, C, I)
Ensures no work package is unassigned, prevents duplication, and provides clear accountability. See RACI definition for details.
